Goodbye

Last night when
Summer’s flight
Lulled mothers,
Wooed lovers,
I said,
“Come o’er,
Come o’er.”

Last night when
Heart’s delight
Spoke sweetly,
Kissed deeply,
I said,
“My love,
My love.”

Last night when
Truth’s light
Glimmered faintly,
Kindled bravely,
I said,
“Beware,
Beware.”

Last night when
Husband’s wife
Quiet cried,
“I bore him five!”
I said,
“Not I,
Not I!”

Last night when
Husband’s sleight
Charmed me
Harmed thee,
I said,
“Goodbye,
Goodbye.”
